Privacy
What this site collects, what it stores in your browser, and which other companies’ services load on its pages.

Hosting
This site is hosted by Vercel (opens in a new tab). Like any web host, Vercel receives your IP address and browser details when it delivers a page, and may keep them in its server logs.
Analytics
Two analytics tools run on carterhart.com. They count visits; neither of them tells us who you are.
Google Analytics records which pages you view, the page that sent you here, your browser and device type, and your approximate location (city or region, worked out from your IP address). It loads from googletagmanager.com and sends data to google-analytics.com and google.com. It sets two cookies on this site, _ga and one named _ga_ followed by this site’s measurement ID, which tell repeat visits apart from new ones. Google sets them to last two years; Chrome and some other browsers cap them at about 400 days, and Safari may delete them sooner. That data goes to Google and is handled under Google’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab).
Vercel Analytics counts page views without cookies and without anything stored in your browser.
Posts and videos from other sites
Some pages show material that loads from another company’s servers. When it loads, that company receives your IP address and browser details, and its own privacy policy applies, as it would if you visited its site.
- The home page shows posts from X and Threads. They load when the carousel scrolls into view. X sets a short-lived security cookie (__cf_bm, 30 minutes) on x.com and twitter.com. Threads keeps a session ID in your browser’s storage on threads.com. Images in Threads posts load from Instagram’s servers.
- The Coverage page shows videos from YouTube. Nothing loads from YouTube until you click a video; the thumbnails and running times are stored on this site. When you click, the player loads from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode, and the video streams from Google’s servers. The player sets no cookies, but it keeps its settings in your browser’s storage on youtube-nocookie.com.
If you are signed in to X, Threads or Instagram, those companies may link what you see here to your account.
The contact form
The contact form is the only place this site asks for your name or email address. When you send a message, your name, email, topic and message go to Web3Forms (opens in a new tab), which delivers them to our inbox. Web3Forms also keeps a copy of each message for 7 days, then deletes it. The form uses hCaptcha (opens in a new tab) to check that a person is sending it. hCaptcha loads from its own servers, sets a short-lived security cookie (__cf_bm, 30 minutes), and looks at how the page is used to tell people from bots. We use what you send only to read and answer your message.
What this site stores in your browser
- gm-cw-ack: set when you close the content warning, so it isn’t shown again on your next visit.
- dyp-coverage-vid: the video you last picked on the Coverage page, so it is ready when you come back.
Both stay in your browser. Neither is sent to us. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them, and the content warning will show again.
Sharing
We don’t sell visitor data. We don’t share it with anyone except the services named on this page.
Opting out
To stop Google Analytics on this and every other site, install Google’s browser opt-out add-on (opens in a new tab). You can also block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings. Blocking third-party cookies stops the X and hCaptcha cookies; Google Analytics’ cookies belong to this site, so blocking them means blocking cookies for carterhart.com. Most content blockers also stop the analytics tools and the embedded posts and videos.
